Our Work in the Community

The Foundation works to create programming for all ages and we’ve hosted events for families, school-age children, and senior citizens. Through coordination with local government and other nonprofit organizations including West Mifflin Borough, West Mifflin Area School District, the high school’s Titan Leaders in the Community club, the West Mifflin JROTC program, local sports organizations, the Community College of Allegheny County, and many other local groups, the Foundation is able to pool resources to create programs and events for our community at little-to-no cost. Below are some of the highlights of our recent events and programs. Stay up-to-date on our most recent activity by liking our Facebook page here

The Foundation coordinated with a number of other organizations to host or cohost 4 major events:

Swim & Gym – coinciding with the Sample West Mifflin event hosted by the School District, the Foundation organized an event that allowed students to swim in the high school pool, play in the high school gym, or both while their parents visited the booths at Sample West Mifflin. Pizza and a bounce house were included for all attendees.

Senior Brunch & Bingo – held twice in 2019 (in March and October), this event invited West Mifflin senior citizens to the high school cafeteria for a free brunch and 10 games of bingo with prizes. Funding to host the event and prizes for the winners are generously donated by the community.

Mon Valley Arts Fest – in partnership with CCAC South Campus, the Foundation hosted Arts Fest to help highlight the art of local students. Local crafters were invited to sell their creations while West Mifflin artists Zac Rutter and Chris Galiyas live-painted throughout the afternoon. Their joint painting was donated to CCAC and now hangs in the South Campus lobby! Arts Fest was held on the lawn at CCAC South Campus and included live music, face painting, and food trucks.

Bark in the Park – to highlight the Foundation’s efforts to build a dog park in West Mifflin, we hosted an information session at the Community Park that included an overview of the dog park plans, the chance talk to pet vendors, a basket auction, and plenty of TREATS for all the good dogs in our community!

In 2018, the Foundation’s main initiative was raising nearly $2,000 to fund a free book drive at West Mifflin elementary schools. Through a partnership with Scholastic Books, we gave away over 1,300 free books to West Mifflin students learning to read. Below are pictures of our student volunteers preparing the books to distribute each month and a feature story in the Valley Mirror on the Foundation’s efforts.

Prior to 2018, the Foundation’s activities included:

      • Serving as the trustee of a $5,000 grant from the Pittsburgh Pirates Charities for new bleachers, dugouts, and equipment at the West Mifflin Girls Softball Association and a $15,000 grant from Duquesne Light Company for the addition of field lighting at the West Mifflin Girls Softball Association field complex.
      • Organizing the donation of camera equipment to the West Mifflin Area High School’s ACE program as well as a 12 person passenger van to the West Mifflin JROTC.
      • Raising over $40,000 for a geological study of the Webster Avenue landslide with funding from local donors, regional nonprofits, and government grants.
